1994 Hall of Fame Game
The Seattle Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in the 48th Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 1, 1994, at Doubleday Field.
Philadelphia struck first in the top of the first when Billy Hatcher singled and scored on John Kruk’s two-run blast. The Phillies would score all of their runs off of homers.
In the bottom of the third, Seattle got one back when 19-year-old Álex Rodríguez, who had made his big league debut only a month before, tripled and scored on a wild pitch from Philadelphia starter Tommy Greene.
But the Phillies extended their lead on a solo home run from catcher Mike Lieberthal in the top of the fourth.
Down 3-1, the Mariners picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tino Martinez doubled and scored on Reggie Jefferson’s single.
Seattle took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Shortstop Giomar Guevara hit a two-out, two-run home run to right-center field off of Jeff Patterson, the only Philadelphia minor leaguer used in the game.
The Mariners were able to hold on for the win thanks to a six-out save from rookie-leaguer Trey Moore. Moore and Matt Wagner combined for five innings of one-hit baseball in which they allowed just two walks. Wagner earned the win.
Greene pitched six innings for the Phillies, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out three. Patterson was tagged with the loss.
Jefferson was the only player on either team to record a multi-hit game, doing so with two hits and an RBI.
Kruk led the Phillies with two RBI.
