1995 BBWAA Career Excellence Award Winner Joseph Durso

Joe Durso was an editor and writer for The New York Times beginning 1950 and a sportswriter and columnist starting in 1964.

He covered 25 World Series for The Times as senior baseball writer.

Durso was born in New York City and was raised in Hudson Falls in the Adirondacks.

He attended New York University and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

His education was interrupted by a stint in the Army Air Forces during World War II where he reached the rank of captain.

He was the author of 13 books, including biographies of Casey Stengel, John McGraw and Lou Gehrig.

He wrote memoirs of the Yankee years with Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, and the 50-year history of Yankee Stadium.

Durso was also a professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

Durso passed away on Dec. 31, 2004.
