1999 Hall of Fame Game
The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers put on a power display in the 53rd Hall of Fame Game on July 26, 1999, at Doubleday Field.
The teams combined for 10 home runs, tying a series record set in 1996, as the Rangers defeated the Royals 11-9.
The two teams were chosen to honor Nolan Ryan and George Brett, who were two of the seven Hall of Fame inductees that year.
Texas used a five-run fourth inning, coming back from a 4-2 deficit to take a 7-4 lead.
The Royals tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, but the Rangers scored runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to take the lead for good.
The game was called after eight innings due to rain.
Jason Grabowski hit two home runs to lead the Rangers. Five other Texas players hit homers off of two Royals pitcher, including starter Jeff Austin, who gave up six.
Texas starter Brady Raggio, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma prior to the game, gave up all nine of the Royals’ runs – five of which were earned – in his five and two-thirds innings pitched.
For the Royals, Larry Sutton was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He homered, singled and doubled en route to a 3-for-5 performance that included four RBI.
Sutton, Tim Spehr and Chad Kreuter homered for the Royals.
Royce Clayton, Rafael Palmeiro and Lee Stevens combined for three of the Rangers' six home runs.
