Women's History: Dirt on Their Skirts
“Take me out to the ball game,” sang Katie Casey in the famous baseball anthem. Katie was not alone. Women and girls have always loved and played the game and have worked hard to fulfill their baseball dreams. In this unit, students will analyze milestones and events in the history of women and girls in baseball to determine how their achievements led to greater opportunities for all.
THEMATIC UNIT OBJECTIVE
- Discuss gender stereotypes in sports, and learn how female baseball players have challenged those stereotypes.
- Explore the important role played by the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in American history.
- Compare and contrast the experiences of female baseball players and all-women's baseball teams during different eras of American history.
ROOKIE (GRADES 3-5)
LESSON 1 (PRE-VISIT): BASEBALL IS A GIRL THING
Students will discuss common gender stereotypes, and learn how the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League challenged stereotypes about girls and sports.
LESSON 2 (PRE-VISIT): MEET THE ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS
Students will learn about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League along with other non-traditional roles held by women during World War II.
LESSON 3 (PRE-VISIT): THE ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS HIT THE ROAD
Students examine photographs and primary sources to draw conclusions about daily life in the AAGPBL.
LESSON 4: ON-SITE VISIT OR VIDEO CONFERENCE
Students will work with museum teachers to reinforce concepts and ideas introduced in the classroom.
